About Ethiopia

Ankober

Ankober the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Shoa served for a while as the Capital of the Ethiopian Empire during the reign of Emperor Menelik II prior to the move to the current Capital Addis Ababa. Ankober is situated at 172 Km North East of Addis Ababa with which it is linked by good roads and enjoys adequate postal and telecommunications services. The distinguishing feature of Ankober, in addition to its being an important historical heritage site of the country, is its spectacular scenery over looking the Great Rift Valley. The top of the hill stands at an altitude of 2870 meters above sea level. The surrounding mountains such as Imemihret, Fiqre Gimb and Gorgo offer interesting trekking areas for visitors. Ankober is also a great cultural, religious and historical centre.

The Catholic missionary of the 19th century, Aba Massayas, started missionary activities in neighboring Fiqre Gimb, thereby making the area as one of the most important historical centre of Catholicism in Ethiopia.

There are very many famous Ethiopian Orthodox Monasteries and Churches in and around Ankober.

A village known as Let Marefeya, served as the site of the Italian Geographical expedition centre in the 1880s. The head of the expedition, Count Antinori was buried there and his tomb can be visited today.

Mantiq is a nearby Monastery with Judeo-Christian tradition Aliyo Amba, situated at 14 Km to the South of Ankober, was an important trade centre in the 19th century, connecting the highlands with the  famous Red Sea port Zeila, now replaced by Djibouti.

Ankober has name and fame as one of the most important political centers in Ethiopian history. Merid Azmatch Amha Iyesus (1745-1775), one of the rulers descending from the Solomon Dynasty, is credited as the founder of Ankober. His descendents ruled from there for about one hundred years and built up Ankober to a very important city until Emperor Menilek II moved the Capital city to Entotto and finally to Addis Ababa in 1886.

Menelik married Itegue Taytu at the Ankober Medhane Alem church where the golden cloak of the wedding is still kept. A good number of Shoan rulers were buried around the Ankober churches.
